Learn how to do a backflip!

If you want to take your trampoline jumping fun to the next level you should learn how to do a backflip! Mastering this cool, but difficult move, will not only make you feel great but will also impress your friends!

The right trampoline

You don’t have to be a gymnast, an acrobat, or into parkour, to learn how to do a backflip. However, you must make sure you have the right equipment. A suitably big trampoline with a robust netting or enclosure will help to make sure you do not hurt yourself.  The North Explorer rectangular or oval-shaped trampolines provide the perfect setting to practice your backflip.  Learning to jump safely and with confidence in the right space is very important.

The groundwork

Before you start any kind of flipping you should make sure your basic jumps are high enough. Getting height in your jumps is the basis for performing any type of trick. Good core stability and strength in your legs will help you jump higher.

Learning how to land safely and getting the right landing position on each jump are also critical aspects of your training.  We also suggest that you master some of the simpler tricks, such as a back-drop or a back handspring, before you even consider attempting a backflip.

Learning any new move should, ideally, be done on a trampoline you are familiar with.  Not all trampolines feel the same or have the same bounce. Become familiar with your trampoline and use it for a while before you attempt your first backflip.   This will help you avoid injury.

Learning how to do a backflip needs confidence, patience and lots of practice.

If you are ready and have prepared, then let’s begin.

Step 1 – The warm-up

Start by warming up. All exercise should start by properly warming up your muscles.  Warm muscles help prevent injury when doing any form of exercise, including jumping on a trampoline.  You can warm up by doing some simple stretches and simply jumping on your trampoline.

Step 2 – The positioning

Now you are ready to do a backflip.  Position yourself correctly on your trampoline. The correct position depends on the shape of your trampoline. On a rectangular or an oval trampoline, you should be at one end of the trampoline. On a round trampoline, you should be one or two steps away from the center of the trampoline.

Make sure your head is in the correct position to perform the trick. Your head should be in a neutral, forward-facing position. Do not look back diagonally or to the side; precision is key.

Step 3 – Getting the height

Start jumping with some height. Height is critical to get the momentum needed to successfully complete the trick. You need enough height to be able to flip yourself over.

Step 4 – Back-Flipping around

Once you have reached a good, controlled jump height and feel confident to execute the trick you are ready. Put your hands up and double-check your head is in the correct, neutral position.

Throw your arms up and look up to the sky. Make sure you use your arms to gain momentum and propel you up and then around. This motion will help you protect your neck and land without hurting yourself. At the same time as lifting your arms up, use the momentum to lift your hips, shoulders and body behind you in a swinging motion.  Your weight should be in your legs.

Tucking your knees into your chest, whilst keeping them apart, might be an easier option than flipping with straight legs.  You can progress onto straight legs when you are ready.

Step 5 – The backflip landing

Initially, you can land your backflip on your hands and knees. You can then progress this to land on your hands and feet. Eventually, you will be able to land just on your feet.

Make sure that you give yourself enough time to get comfortable with each part of the process.

Important Safety Tips

It is important that you always practice trampolining safely. This is especially important when you learn how to do a backflip.

  • Always have someone with you who knows how to do a backflip and guide you. Never practice tricks, particularly a backflip alone.
  • Know your limits. Don’t be too bold and overestimate your abilities when learning a new trick.
  • Learn to fall correctly to help prevent injury
  • Only practice on a suitable trampoline with excellent safety features.  The trampoline springs should be covered and inaccessible to the jumper. The trampoline should have an intact, closed netting around it to prevent falls. Adequate padding should be wrapped around any hard parts of the trampoline to prevent injury.

Buying a Trampolines in the UAE: what should I look for?

Premium trampoline Palm Dubai

Are you thinking of buying a trampoline in the UAE?  With so many different brands, shapes and sizes on the market, it can be hard to know which one to choose.

To make the decision easier, we have put together a list of things you may want to consider when purchasing a trampoline. Keep these in mind as you shop, and you’ll be sure to find the perfect choice of trampoline in the UAE.

Who is it for & how will it be used?

Before buying a trampoline in the UAE its important to ask: “who’s it for and how will it be used?” If your answer isn’t clear, then take some time and think about who will be using this equipment. Some trampolines, like the Explorer  from North, can grow with your family, making them the perfect choice for a growing family as well as more advanced teens.

Quality & Price

Of course, the price of a trampoline will be a major deciding factor. Generally, the higher the quality of the trampoline the more expensive it is.  If you can spend more on a higher quality trampoline, you can save yourself money in the long run.  For extra durability, opt for a frame made from steel and pads that have been UV treated.    Cheaper trampolines will not last as long, particularly in the harsh summer sun like we experience in the UAE. Check you can get replacement parts with any trampoline you chose, even the most robust netting might need replacing after several years.

Some trampolines sold in the UAE have delivery and installation included in the sale price, like those supplied from Jump Fitness Dubai, whilst others do not. Check you are getting everything you need included in the price you pay.

Trampoline Bounce

The bounce is one of the most important features of a trampoline.  The bounce can come from either springs, flexible composite rods or bungee cords.

Spring-fitted trampolines have stretched canvas  attached to metal coil springs. The springs create tension which affects how high the bounce is. To put it another way, the quality of the springs on your trampoline will determine how high the bounce will be. A larger spring will allow a smoother, higher bounce, whilst a shorter spring results in a stiffer and much lower and restricted bounce.

Spring-less trampolines that use fiberglass rods or bungee cords, require a high degree of force to generate a good return bounce. This means a good, high bounce is more difficult to achieve, particularly for children.

Small children need a softer bounce, and heavier, or more experienced jumpers often want a slightly harder bounce. North Trampolines are available in the UAE and allow you to combine the two options in one trampoline with the use of spring extenders.  You can start off with the spring extenders attached, this offers a soft bounce and then remove them as the child gets older and has different needs.

Assembly

Think about how much effort you want to put into your trampoline setup. Some designs take hours to put up and might require professional assembly.  Others, like the ones from North Trampolines, can be quickly put up, thanks to the zero-bolt mechanism.

Jumping Mat

If you expect to use your trampoline a lot or you live in an area with variable or extreme weather conditions, such as the heat we experience here in the UAE,  then you might want to purchase a high-quality jumping mat.

Safety Padding

These cover the springs of the trampoline.  Completely covering the springs ensures that  fingers, toes, or hair from do not get caught and injured. It is important that this pad fits perfectly over the edges of the trampoline and padding in case someone lands on top of it.  The best quality trampolines have the padding secured in place to prevent accidental movement when the jumpers are using the trampoline.

Shape

Trampolines come in different shapes, including; oval, round, square, and rectangles. Choose the best one to suit the user and the space you have allocated in the garden.

Oval trampolines: have a larger surface area, allowing for a larger and longer jump. They redirect the jumper to the middle of the trampoline. Great for gymnasts and practicing tricks. The oval and rectangle shapes are perfect for side return spaces.

Round trampolines: A round trampoline bounces the jumper towards the middle and bounciest part of the trampoline.

Square trampolines: these allow the jumper to jump from corner to corner and provide more bounce than either the round or the oval-shaped trampolines.

Rectangle trampolines: the best by far in terms of bounce and highly recommended for athletic and acrobatic practice.

Safety

A safely built trampoline vastly reduces the potential for injuries when bouncing. We believe the following safety features are essential inclusions for any trampoline bought in the UAE:

A safety net: a robust net greatly reduces the chance of falling off and frame impact injuries. Particularly important on any lifted off the ground trampoline.
The Frame: a sturdy frame will provide stability and bounce control. The frame near the jump area should be covered in padding.
Padding: a quality padding that covers the spring, frames and any hard part of the trampoline will protect the jumper. Padding is held securely in place which allows the springs to be covered at all times.
Entry and Exit point: ensuring this is secure and not left open minimizes the risk of falls whilst jumping.

Weight limit

Consider the maximum weight limit the trampoline has been tested for. Will it support the total weight of the people who will use it?

We believe North Trampolines offer the perfect combination of superior safety, quality and performance. But don’t just believe us, come and see with your own eyes.
